When is rapid sequence intubation (RSI) indicated?

Rapid sequence intubation (RSI) is indicated for patients who are at risk of airway compromise and require intubation. This procedure is specifically designed to secure the airway of patients who may not be able to maintain it on their own due to various factors such as decreased level of consciousness, facial or neck trauma, or significant respiratory distress. Administering RSI allows for quick intubation while minimizing the risk of aspiration and controlling airway management in a timely manner.

In situations where patients have a stable airway, intervention may not be necessary, and the risks associated with intubation may outweigh the benefits. Similarly, although severe allergic reactions can lead to airway compromise, RSI is specifically indicated when a secure airway is needed and the patient's condition is deteriorating. Chronic respiratory problems might require intubation in acute settings, but they are not an automatic indication for RSI unless there is an acute deterioration or risk of compromise that necessitates immediate intervention.
